Audio Recommendation - The Auntie Matter - Jonathan Morris

I recommend The Auntie Matter by Jonathan Morris. The Auntie Matter is the first story in the second season of the Fourth Doctor Adventures Range. This audio features the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) and the first incarnation of his Time Lady companion, Romana (Mary Tamm).

Synopsis - England in the 1920s.
Whilst K9 is off in the TARDIS leading the Black Guardian on a wild goose chase, the Doctor and Romana are enjoying a leisurely lifestyle as the Lord and Lady of a London townhouse. But trouble never stays away from them for long, and before they know it a chance discovery of alien technology leads them deep into the heart of the English countryside where a malign presence lurks.
As the Doctor dodges deadly butlers and ferocious gamekeepers, Romana is faced with a malevolent Aunt and an even deadlier peril - marriage.

Doctor Who Big Finish Audio Box Set of the Week 7 - UNIT Dominion

Week 7's (February 27, 2016) Audio Drama of the Week was yet another box set, this time being UNIT Dominion.  This box set features the Seventh Doctor and Lost Stories companion, Raine Creevy and "The Other Doctor" and his "companion" Dr. Elizabeth Klein.

The universe stands on the brink of a dimensional crisis - and the Doctor and Raine are pulled into the very epicenter of it.  Meanwhile, on Earth, UNIT scientific advisor Dr. Elizabeth Klein and an incarnation of the Doctor she's never encountered before are tested to the limit by a series of bizarre, alien invasions.

At the heart of it all is a terrible secret, almost as old as the Time Lords themselves. Reality is beginning to unravel and two Doctors, Klein, Raine and all of UNIT must see all their strength and guile to prevent the whole of creation being torn apart.

Reasoning: I chose this box set because it features two Doctors and it is a more UNIT based story where the Doctors take second stage.

Doctor Who Big Finish Monthly Range Preview - The Master Trilogy

Starting next month, the Big Finish Monthly Range will be starting a trilogy of audio dramas that will span across the 5th, 6th, and 7th doctors.  This trilogies main villain will be none other than...The Master! The Master Trilogy starts with a 5th Doctor story entitled,...And You Will Obey Me and will be followed by the 6th Doctor story, Vampire of the Mind all to lead up to the epic conclusion in the 7th Doctor story, The Two Masters.  In The Two Masters, Geoffrey Beevers' Master (The Keeper of Traken, The Light at the End, Mastermind) will join up with his future incarnation played by Alex MacQueen (UNIT Dominion, Dark Eyes 2, Dark Eyes 3, Dark Eyes 4).

1.And You Will Obey Me - Alan Barnes

The Master: wanted for crimes without number, across five galaxies.
The Master: escaped his pursuers. Last known location: rural Hexford, England, Earth.
The Master: dead and buried in an unmourned grave, in a lonely churchyard.
Apparently.

2. Vampire of the Mind - Justin Richards

Somewhere off the South Coast of England, there’s a lonely island. On that island stands a solitary castle, long since abandoned – haunted, they say. But the truth is, that castle houses something far worse than mere ghosts.
The castle is what lies at the end of a trail followed by the Doctor in search of several missing scientists – all of them connected to the top secret Dominus Institute and its elusive CEO, Sir Andrew Gobernar…
But the Doctor will soon discover that he’s the one being haunted, by a ghost from his past… or perhaps, his future.

3. The Two Masters - John Dorney

The future is dying. All over the universe, gaps are beginning to appear. From the space lanes terrorised by the rag-tag remnants of the once-mighty Rocket Men, to the empire of the Gorlans, stricken by a terrible civil war. Gaps in space/time, portents of the end of everything.
Only three beings might prevent it. The Doctor, a renegade Time Lord from Gallifrey. The Master, another renegade Time Lord from Gallifrey. And another Master, yet another renegade Time Lord from Gallifrey.
One Doctor. Two Masters. What could possibly go wrong?

Doctor Who Audio Box Set of the Week - Week 6 - The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield - Volume 1

Since the blog has been acting up, I will be uploading the past two Doctor Who Audios of the Week plus this weeks. I will be starting with the choice for Week 6 (February 20, 2016) which is The New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield Volume 1.

The Revolution by Nev Fountain

On the planet of Arviem 2, Bernice Summerfield has a lot of problems. Pursued by robots, maniacs and miracles, she has another issue to contend with. The Doctor's come looking for her – and he's not feeling himself.

Good Night, Sweet Ladies by Una McCormack

Bernice has come to the Moon of Adolin on a desperate mission. Instead, she finds an abandoned labyrinth, two confused survivors, and something ancient that needs her help.

Random Ghosts by Guy Adams

Welcome to the Forbidden World. This world has a secret. The problem is that no-one can remember what it is. Time is broken here. Those trapped here must live the same day over and over – forming alliances, lying to each other, trying to escape. Welcome to the Forbidden World.

The Lights of Skaro by James Goss

Bernice Summerfield is on Skaro, and she's very much on her own. The Doctor can't get to her, not this time. All Benny can do is stay alive for as long as possible. And, in a city full of Daleks, that's not going to be very long.

Reasoning: The reason I have selected this audio is because it mainly features one of the most famous Big Finish companions, the archaeologist Professor Bernice Summerfield (Benny to her friends). The Seventh Doctor is very loosely involved and this set focuses more on Bernice Summerfield.

Doom Coalition 2 - Released

Sorry for being away, I have been having problems with the blog. Now I am back and back at the right time. This week, Doom Coalition 2 was released. I will be purchasing this audio on the 15th of March and will soon blog my thoughts soon after that. The trailer is on Big Finish Productions YouTube page and I highly recommend checking it out.  Below are the covers for this amazing box set.

2.1: Beachhead - Nicholas Briggs

2.2: Scenes from Her Life - John Dorney

2.3: The Gift - Marc Platt

2.4: The Sonomancer - Matt Fitton

As I said before, a review of this brilliant box set will be uploaded as soon as possible.

Doom Coalition 2 Update

The covers for Doom Coalition 2 and the extended synopses have been released.

2.1 Beachhead by Nicholas Briggs

In an attempt to recharge his batteries after his confrontation with the Eleven, the Doctor takes Liv and Helen to the sleepy English seaside village of Stegmoor. But they find the village in turmoil and, to make matters worse, their arrival uncovers a mystery from the Doctor’s past which threatens the future safety of the planet. Can the Doctor prevent the Voord from invading Earth? And more importantly why have they come in the first place?

2.2 Scenes from Her Life by John Dorney

Investigating the appearance of the Voord on Earth, the Doctor, Liv and Helen follow a trail which takes them to the other side of the universe. There they discover a mysterious and almost deserted gothic city lost in space and time, in which the grotesque inhabitants are conducting a vile and inhumane experiment. The Doctor and his companions must hurry to save the lives of those in danger before the experiment is a success and the unimaginable consequences become all too real.

2.3 The Gift by Marc Platt

The TARDIS deposits its crew on Earth in San Francisco, 1906. There they find an actor-manager desperate to stage his definitive production of King Lear. But a real storm is headed their way when he becomes the possessor of a mysterious psychic ‘Gift’ which is hungry for power and intent on wreaking havoc and destruction. But exposure to so much psychic activity has the Doctor becoming increasingly erratic. Can he battle his demons and save the world?

2.4 The Sonomancer by Matt Fitton

On the other side of the galaxy a mining company is exploiting the already unstable planet of Syra for every precious mineral it contains. River Song is attempting to save the native people. She needs the Doctor’s help, but she also knows he mustn’t yet discover her true identity. The final confrontation sees the Doctor once again face his enemy the Eleven in an attempt to prevent the destruction of Syra and the genocide of its inhabitants.

Doctor Who Big Finish Previews - Doom Coalition 2!

This is the first post in a new series on this blog focusing on the unreleased audio dramas of Big Finish Productions.

We begin with Doom Coalition 2, the next box set in the Doom Coalition series. This box set features the Eighth Doctor, Liv Chenka, Helen Sinclair, The Eleven, and the Doctor's future wife, Professor River Song.

2.1 Beachhead by Nicholas Briggs

The residents of Stegmoor Bay have more to deal with than the elements when a flash flood uncovers the remains of a Voord scout ship.

2.2 Scenes from Her Life by John Dorney

Following a clue into the time vortex, the Doctor investigates a desolate city only to discover a horrifying plot to create a monster.

2.3 The Gift by Marc Platt

San Francisco, 1906, and a desperate race to prevent the destruction of more than just the city.

2.4 The Sonomancer by Matt Fitton

River Song tries to stop a mining company from exploiting the Syran people only to discover the miners have uncovered much more than they bargained for.

It will be interesting to see how the story carries on from Doom Coalition 1 and how the Eleven storyline continues as Big Finish has said that he will be making a return in at least one of the stories.  The dynamic between River Song and the Eighth Doctor will be interesting to see more since Rulers of the Universe in the Diary of River Song box set.  I should probably mention that chronologically, this encounter between the Eighth Doctor and River Song takes place before the encounter in River's box set.  The Voord will be making a return in the first story of the box set since their appearance in Big Finish's Early Adventures story, Domain of the Voord.  I am highly looking forward to this box set which I hope is a little bit better than its first box set.

Doctor Who Big Finish Audio Drama of the Week - Week 5 - Doom Coalition 1!

This weeks Big Finish Audio Drama of the Week is Doom Coalition 1 with the Eighth Doctor, his companion, Liv Chenka, and new to the TARDIS crew, Helen Sinclair.  This box set takes place after Dark Eyes.

1. The Eleven by Matt Fitton

The Eleven. A Time Lord whose previous personalities live on in his mind: arguing, plotting, jostling for supremacy... He is also Gallifrey's most dangerous criminal. And he has escaped.
The Doctor is recalled to his homeworld to lead the hunt. As they search the Capitol's corridors of power, the Academy halls and the cells of the highest security penitentiary, Liv realises the worst monsters may be among the Doctor's own people.
For inside his fractured mind, the Eleven has a plan. And its deadly consequences will extend through space and time...

2. The Red Lady by John Dorney

An anomaly in time brings the Doctor and Liv to London in the 1960s, where they meet a young lady named Helen Sinclair - desperately trying to make a name for herself in the face of sexism and prejudice.
Whilst the Doctor tried to uncover the secrets of a mysterious artefact, a far deadlier mystery awaits Liv and Helen in the collection of a recently deceased antiquarian.
Because that's where they find the Red Lady. Because if you do, you might not like what you see.

3. The Galileo Trap by Marc Platt

Helen Sinclair doesn't know what hit her. One moment she was trapped in a dead-end job in 1960s London, and now she is transported back to Renaissance Italy over three centuries before. Florence is a city in turmoil. A new plague stalks the streets. A ferocious behemoth rampages through the vineyards. And Galileo Galilei, celebrated scientist, astronomer and old friend of the Doctor, is imprisoned in his own villa for heresy.
But why has Galileo summoned the Doctor? Who are the mysterious Fortuna and Cleaver? Why have they been sent to Earth? And what is Galileo's secret? Is it the last thing he saw before he went blind?

4. The Satanic Mill by Edward Collier

The Satanic Mill - a vast Victorian factory floating in the deep of space.
As the Doctor closes in on his quarry, long buried animosities come boiling to the surface on this ancient and powerful satellite, in a final confrontation that could have unimaginable consequences.
And even that is only the beginning...

Reasoning: Stories that are wrote for the Eighth Doctor are always strong, especially since Big Finish has changed the format to box sets instead of single releases.  Matt Fitton and John Dorney are extraordinary writers and really do this box set justice.

Big Finish Audio Drama of the Week - Week 4 - The War Doctor - Volume 1 - Only the Monstrous!

Sorry for not posting an audio drama of the week last week so this week I will be posting two audio dramas of the week.

Last weeks Audio Drama of the Week was The first volume of the War Doctor saga, Only the Monstrous.

1.1 The Innocent

As the Daleks mass their time fleet for a final assault on Gallifrey, something ancient is waiting for them at Omega One. And a sacrifice must be made.
Arch-manipulator and Time Lord strategist, Cardinal Ollistra receives shock news of the Doctor’s death.
Meanwhile, on the planet Keska, a parochial war has returned to plague a peaceful civilisation after decades of tranquillity. But how can such a war have any connection with the great Time War which, at any one moment in the whole of eternity, could threaten to tear the universe apart?
If only the Doctor were still alive.

1.2 The Thousand Worlds

With the high-ranking Time Lord Seratrix behind enemy lines, the War Doctor finds himself assigned to a rescue mission. But any room for manoeuvre is severely restricted by an area of space known as the Null Zone.
Times have changed on Keska, and a countdown to destruction is beginning.
But who are the Taalyens and what is their part in the great and terrifying Dalek plan?

1.3 The Heart of the Battle

Trapped in a citadel swarming with Daleks, the Time Lord rescue force must find a way to overcome insurmountable odds. With the Daleks apparently planning to rule the Null Zone, perhaps their thirst for universal conquest and victory has been quenched…
The War Doctor doesn’t believe so — but how can he prove it without destroying any chance of peace?
As the countdown to the destruction of Keska proceeds, a deadly choice must be made... A choice that will define this Doctor, and perhaps forever cast him in the role of ‘monster’.

Reasoning: This box set covers a very important part of Doctor Who history that also provides a reason for the gap between Classic and Modern Series.  John Hurt is brilliant as the War Doctor and you will really get to see a different side of the War Doctor that you see in The Day of the Doctor.

Big Finish Audio Drama of the Week - Week 3 - The Diary of River Song - Series 1!

This weeks Audio Drama of the week is actually a recently released box set about The Doctor's adventurous wife, Professor River Song.  The box set contains four stories.

Synopses:

1.1 The Boundless Sea by Jenny T Colgan

River Song has had more than enough excitement for a while. Deciding the universe – and her husband – can look after themselves, she has immersed herself in early 20th century academia, absorbed in writing archaeological theses.
But when a mysterious tomb is found in a dry, distant land, excitement comes looking for River.
Can Professor Song stop any more members of the expedition from dying? What deadly secrets lie buried within the crypt? And will British Consul Bertie Potts prove to be a help, or a hindrance?

1.2 I Went to a Marvellous Party by Justin Richards

River Song always enjoys a good party, even when she’s not entirely sure where or when the party is taking place. But the party she ends up at is one where not everything – or indeed everyone – is what it seems…
Being River, it doesn’t take her too long to go exploring, and it doesn’t take her too long to get into trouble. The sort of trouble that involves manipulating other civilisations, exploitation, and of course murder.
River is confident she can find the killer. But can she identify them before anyone else – or quite possibly everyone else – gets killed?

1.3 Signs by James Goss

River Song is on the trail of the mysterious, planet-killing SporeShips.
Nobody knows where they come from. Nobody knows why they are here. All they do know is that wherever the SporeShips appear, whole civilisations are reduced to mulch.
But River has help. Her companion is a handsome time-travelling stranger, someone with specialist knowledge of the oddities and dangers the universe has to offer. For Mr Song has a connection to River’s future, and he would never want his wife to face those perils alone…

1.4 The Rulers of the Universe by Matt Fitton

As shocking secrets are exposed, and a grand plan for the universe is revealed, River decides it’s time she took control of events once and for all.
Out in deep space, a clandestine society faces off with an ancient and powerful alien force – but, for River, there’s an added complication.
The Eighth Doctor has been caught in the middle, and she must make sure her future husband can arrive at his own destiny with all his memories – not to mention his lives - intact…

Reasoning - IT'S RIVER SONG, WHY NOT!!!

Big Finish Audio Drama of the Week - Week 2 - Animal by: Andrew Cartmel

Synopsis - Margrave University in 2001, and Raine Creevy is enjoying her first trip into the future.
For the Doctor, there are mysteries to solve: what are the alien creatures imprisoned in the science labs? And what are the true motives of the student Scobie and his followers?
With enemies on all sides, the Doctor teams up with his old friend Brigadier Bambera and the forces of UNIT in a battle for the future of the whole world.

Reasoning - I chose this audio drama because this audio in particular really exposes the "Cartmel Masterplan", being written by Andrew Cartmel himself.  In this drama, the side of the Seventh Doctor that the masterplan proposed shines with a more darker and mysterious essence.  Brigadier Winifred Bambera returns in this audio portrayed by the one and only Angela Bruce.  I recommend this audio drama to anyone who is a fan of Battlefield, the Seventh Doctor, or the Cartmel Masterplan.

Big Finish Audio Drama of the Week - Week 1 - Planet of the Rani by: Marc Platt

The first Big Finish Audio Drama of the Week is "Planet of the Rani" by: Marc Platt.  Every week, an audio drama or audio drama box-set will be chosen as Audio Drama of the Week.

Synopsis - Miasimia Goria was a quiet planet, an ancient world of bucolic tranquillity… until the Rani arrived with ideas of her own.
She planned to create a race of new gods… gods that she could keep on her leash, but those plans went horribly wrong.
Now, she languishes in the high security of Teccaurora Penitentiary, consigned there by her arch enemy and old student colleague, the Doctor.
But the Rani, always resourceful, ever calculating, knows things about the Doctor’s past that he would rather forget. She wants revenge, even if it takes a hundred years… and then she has other unfinished business.
The ruins of Miasimia Goria await…

Reasoning - I chose this audio drama because I am a huge fan of the Siobhan Redmond incarnation of The Rani.  I like the dynamic between The Rani and the Doctor and the relationship between The Sixth Doctor and his companion Constance Clarke.  The story is gripping and I recommend this story to anyone that is a fan of the Sixth Doctor era and a fan of The Rani.
